RunSmart program looks to help runners on all fronts

Program combines physical, mental and nutritional aspects of running

So you’ve decided that running is your exercise of choice, and now you’re looking for ways to get the most out of it.

You might want to seek the counsel of Bob Pettitt, Cindra Kamphoff and April Graff, who have started the RunSmart program at the Sports Institute of Mankato. The program’s goal is to help runners increase speed, increase endurance, reduce the chances of injury and to eat right to maximize potential.

“This is a very individualized program that pinpoints the needs of each of the runners who come through our program,” said Kamphoff, a certified sport psychology consultant and an associate professor in the Department of Human Performance at Minnesota State. “As far as we know, it’s the only one of its kind in the country.”

What makes RunSmart unique it that it melds the physiological side of running with the mental and nutritional apects. By having those components work together, the goal is to make a more efficient runner.
