The Minnesota State softball team ended its competition in the NSIC/MIAA Crossover Tournament with a perfect 4-0 record on Sunday, downing Lindenwood 11-4 in its final game.
With her team trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the first, MSU’s Lindsay Erickson smacked an RBI double to tie the game. A short time later, Samantha Holien drilled a two-run homer to stake the Mavericks to a 3-1 lead.
MSU upped the lead to 5-1 in the second with a solo homer from Abby Whritenour and a run-scoring single from Abby Sonner. The Mavericks’ long-ball barrage continued in the fourth as Holien smacked another two-run shot.
Avery Carter then clinched the victory with a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth to put MSU up 11-4.
Freshman pitcher Coley Ries got the win, allowing four earned runs on nine hits with five strikeouts and no walks in five innings. Brittany Lauterbach closed it out with two shutout innings.
Tatum Klein went 3 for 4 for the Mavericks while Sonner, Erickson and Holien had two hits apiece. Holien and Carter each knocked in four runs.
The Mavericks, who have won five-straight games, are now 6-4. They return to action March 9 as part of the Rebel Spring Games in Orlando, Fla.
