BISMARCK, N.D. —
Jarvis Williams scored 21 points and had eight rebounds to lead the No. 7 Minnesota State men’s basketball team to an 81-73 Northern Sun victory over Mary on Friday night.
Zach Monaghan scored 14 points and had six assists. Jimmy Whitehead had 12 points — all in the second half — and Assem Marei scored 11 with seven rebounds. Gage Wooten pulled down 12 rebounds
The Mavericks opened up a nine-point lead five minutes into the game when a Whitehead 3-pointer gave them a 15-6 lead.
Mary came back and eventually took a one-point lead. The game went back and forth late for the rest of the first half with the Mavericks holding a 39-36 lead at halftime.
Minnesota State had a strong start to the second half with an 8-3 run and then opened things up with a 14-2 run that gave it an 18-point lead with 4:16 to play. Williams scored 15 of his points in the second half.
Josh Turner led Mary with 20 points.
The Mavericks (17-2, 13-2 in NSIC) will play again today at Minot State.
