A second player bounced from MSU team

Undefeated Mavs have lost two seniors with "attitude" problems

MANKATO — With the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference schedule beginning this weekend, Minnesota State men’s basketball coach Matt Margenthaler has dismissed another player from the team.

Margenthaler said Wednesday that senior forward Andre Gilbert is no longer with the team, and Margenthaler tweeted “addition by subtraction, go Mavs” Tuesday night. A couple of weeks ago, senior center A.J. Wilson was dismissed from the team for attitude issues.

“(Gilbert) didn’t want to be part of the team,” Margenthaler said. “He didn’t want to do the things that needed to be done. It was good for both parties.”

Gilbert and Wilson were both Division I transfers with one season of eligibility remaining. Gilbert’s career has taken many twists, starting at South Dakota State to a junior college in California to Kansas State to a year away from basketball before landing at Minnesota State.

Gilbert was suspended for the first two games in California for violating team rules. He played in both games last weekend, averaging 7.0 points and 5.0 rebounds in a reserve role.

Margenthaler said that junior guard Anthony Brant will make his season debut this weekend. He injured a knee during an exhibition game against Bethany Lutheran.

“He gives us another offensive threat,” Margenthaler said. “He was really shooting the basketball before he was injured, and I look forward to getting him into the mix.”

Junior forward Mike Bisenius remains out after suffering a collapsed lung after taking a fall in practice. Margenthaler said that Bisenius will be out at least until after Christmas.

The Mavericks (4-0) open the Northern Sun schedule with home games against Wayne State at 8 p.m. Friday and Augustana at 6 p.m. Saturday.

“We’re 4-0 because the guys who have been here have done the right things,” Margenthaler said. “A.J. and Andre really haven’t been a part of it.”
