St. Peter library celebrating a decade in new location

ST PETER — The St. Peter Public Library is hosting a special event on Wednesday to celebrate 10 years of operation in its current facility.

The old facility was demolished in the 1998 tornado that swept through south central Minnesota and leveled some parts of St. Peter. Located at South Front Street, the old location lost its roof in the tornado and the vast majority of materials and furnishings was unsalvageable. For several years after the tornado, the library operated out of a pair of emergency trailers.

In May of 2002, the St. Peter Public Library moved into its current location next to the community center.

The celebration is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served all day.

A Meet, Greet and Eat will be held 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The event includes interaction with several authors: Traci DePree (“A Can of Peas”), Barbara Fister (“Through the Cracks”), Julie Gassman (“Crabby Pants”), Janet Schultz (“Battle Cry”), Pell Johnson (“Fowl Stories”) and Sue Schott (“There’s No One Quite Like You”).

For those who pre-register, a free lunch will be provided. Call or email the library by Friday at 507-934-7420 or dougw@saintpetermn.gov.

Several authors will also be present at the library from 4-6 p.m. including Doug Huff and his acting troupe.

Three storytimes will feature local children’s authors sharing their books with children of all ages.

- 10:15 a.m.: Schelli Olmanson McCabe will read “The Great Caterpillar Adventure” and “The Great Bird Adventure.”

- 1:15 p.m.: Judy Biederman will read “Bushy Tail Squirrel’s First Day Out.”

- 6 p.m.: A Pajama Party storytime with authors Margie Nelsen (“The New Name”) and Julie Gassman (“Crabby Pants” and “Eleanor Won’t Share”) sharing their stories while Ron Arsenault provides music. At 6:30 p.m., four therapy dogs from Therapy Dogs, Inc. will visit.
