MANKATO — Tornado warning sirens sounded throughout southern Minnesota Wednesday evening as severe thunderstorms ripped through the area, bringing heavy rain, wind and reports of hail as large as two inches in diameter near North Mankato.

Reports of one inch diameter hail were widespread, from Lake Crystal to Mankato, Waterville and Waseca. Trained weather spotters did report a rotating wall cloud south of Mankato but there were no reports of funnel clouds or touchdowns as of 8 p.m. Wednesday.
